A Storm In A ..... Cupcake ?!?

Mt. Kilimanjaro ... Africa's highest mountain. Taken from the road to the farm a few months ago.

Phew. Okay. So in the almost 2 years since I started this blog, I have only had one negative comment (& a couple of sarcastic ones, which I chose not to publish !) For the most part, my blog has been wonderfully received by people all over the world – by people who’ve visited Tanzania, and those who haven’t – by people who live here today, and those who used to – by both expat’s and Tanzanian’s alike. So it came as a surprise this week, when I was accused (and by a Tanzanian, at that !) of lying and deceiving my readers ! The storm in a teacup ? An innocent comment made in my “Easy Vanilla Cupcakes with Chocolate Frosting” post about the quality of flour and sugar I bake with. (If you wish to, you can read the post and resulting comments over here.)

Long time readers of my blog will know how untrue these accusations are and how much I love my adopted country of Tanzania and her wonderful people and how I continually promote the country, local products and tourism. Which is why the comment’s made even less sense to me !

I receive many emails from blog readers who wish to visit Africa, and who have perhaps been in two minds about visiting Tanzania (or any other African country, for that matter, as Africa is ‘the big unknown’ to many people), but who upon researching the country have come upon my blog through a Google search or similar, and have been so impressed with what Tanzania has to offer, and being able to see a ‘true’ picture of the place from someone who actually lives there, that they’ve decided to come and visit !

There’ve also been a few people who’ve been offered jobs here or in other African countries, who say that reading my blog (& corresponding with me ‘behind-the-scenes’) has swayed their decision to choose Tanzania over another location ! And those people come here, spend money, employ people and (hopefully) add something back before they leave …. so, in a roundabout sort of way, my blog has helped contribute to that.

After publishing, and responding, to the negative comments on the post, I have since received more ‘choice words’ via Blogger comments from the same person, which I have chosen not to publish as I don’t want to waste any more time or energy on this person (who seems to be quite bitter & who obviously has issues in their own life – my friend Jo has a great expression “Hurt people …. hurt people” … so true and I actually feel sorry for this person at the end of the day – imagine living your life with so much anger inside you ? I think the issue here probably goes far deeper than ‘insects in flour’ !)

I have a tracking tool on this blog (which I never use, unless in a case like this !) so I know exactly where this person is posting from, as well as where else they have posted about my blog on the internet (a nasty comment on another blog, including a link back to my blog to alert people – mostly fellow Tanzanian’s – to the post) and the funniest thing of all, is that this person has infact done me a favour as because of this link on another site, they’ve sent some lovely traffic my way and caused my blog to have close on 1100 ‘hits’ yesterday alone ………… with more new visitors as we speak !

Having my cake and eating it too ? Hold the multi coloured sprinkles, please – I’ll have mine with a sprinkling of insects on the top instead ;)

Lynda--there will always be spoilers. You handled yourself well. Believe me, these anonymous people are living with more agitation and sadness than you ever will. Keep up the good work. I love reading you and the travel help you have given me.

I can't believe anyone would be so petty, what a shame. Even if s/he knows where you can get different flour, why not just say that...?

I found your blog through some random links & have been a regular reader for nearly a year now, I knew virtually nothing about Africa but you've shown us so much that Tanzania is certainly on my travel to-do list now. Insects or no insects!! :)

I never understand why people leave negative comments. I just wouldn't visit, it I didn't like the content or if I disagreed. I've only noticed positive things on here!

Lynda...I just looked at the comment written to you. Now that you have communicated with that PERSON, let it go. We all know and value what you write and realize that those words were written by a someone who probably makes a career out of being negative. I'm impressed that you got over 1100 hits in one day!!!! Those who come to read you will be able to figure out what a fine ambassador you are for your country. Isn't it interesting how people like that don't have the guts to post their names?

Lynda, Thank goodness we all know that you are a kind, warm woman. It's obvious in every post. Ignore the "hurt" man and hope that he goes and bothers someone else.

Lynda, I have learned so much from your blog. I would be very disapointed if it ceased to be. You need to ignore the negative comments and continue to teach us about your country of which I know you are proud!

Hi Lynda, I had read the cupcake post but obviously before 'those' comments.I skim through nearly every day even if I don't have time to leave a comment.I have enjoyed reading all of your posts about Tanzania which are always sympathetic and informative.
You dealt with the comments very well as I am sure they were most hurtful. What struck me about it was, if this person did not find any of the things in flour which you have from time to time Thank God I would have never eaten anything that they made!!
Even over here where flour is packed and sold in supermarkets we are told that after prolonged shelf time it contains mites which are too small to see .
Anyway the cupcakes look delicious, keep up the good work as a tremendous ambassador for your country.

Lynda, sometimes we just have to consider the source of negative comments. We take your word as fiat and this spoiler is a misguided fool.

Lynda, I just read through the comments left by "Anonymous" and can't believe someone would say such things. I love visiting your blog and reading about your life in Africa, and I think you are a wonderful ambassador for your country.
I thought you handled yourself beautifully in your reply to "Anonymous". Maybe they'll back-off for a while. ;)
Keep up the good work with your blog!!

Lynda--you can't please everyone. Maybe now that they've said their peace, they will leave it alone. Your response was probably nicer than mine would have been (I'm ashamed to say). I, for one, LOVE your country, and can't wait to come back---bugs or no bugs---in the meantime, I can read your blog and feel like I'm still there:)

I have been following your blog for a long time. I am amazed that anyone would not think positive things about what you have said about Tanzania. Two of my good friends have just now arrived in your country as representatives of the USA State department and I told them that I knew they would enjoy their stay there--only from reading what you have had to say about the country.

Hi Lynda! have to tell you that you are doing such a good work! i love this blog. i have been following this for about 2 months now, don't even know how i ended up in this blog! lol! since then i fall in love with it! As of Tanzanian origin living in UK i have been using your blog to show my 10 years old son who never been to Africa before how beautiful the continent is especially Tanzania. I have recommended it to my work mates who are also planning to visit the country. As someone above commented that you cannot please everybody in this world. Keep it up!! Your post about the flour brought back many happy childhood memories of helping my mother pick stones & bugs out of our Zambian flour!! It's horrible that there are people out there who feel it's necessary to post such petty comments - as you so rightly say they obviously have deep issues in their own life. I think the fact that they can hide in their own home behind the safety of a computer screen and relative anonymity makes some people feel very "brave" and do things and say things that they wouldn't dream of in the real world. At the end of the day "anonymous" has just made him/her self look very stupid!

Hi Lynda I love your blogs its one of the best, as I have often told you that via email as well, its so positive and as my parents also taught me and maybe some people need to learn "if you have nothing nice to say keep your mouth shut!"

Great post! Good for you taking the higher road. I can't imagine why someone would take offense to something so simple as bugs in the flour. Believe me, in Kuwait, most of the rice has bugs. You just let them float to the top and then skim them off. It happens! There are certainly more important things in life and your blog has done nothing but support a positive vantage of life in Tanzania. My husband had planned to come for a business prospect but had to cancel and at some point we had planned to visit for pure pleasure. That may still be in the cards and coming across your blog has made me feel so much better about the prospect. I love how you closed this post. Very funny! Best wishes to you and don't let the boogers get you down. HA! Blessings, Tammy

T'S DAILY TREASURES thanks for the kind words of support, I'm glad to see that the 'bugs-in-the-flour-rice-etc' thing seems to be a world wide 'problem' ! Have a great week ....
