I thought that I'd share some images with you of the road home on Sunday after our visit to the hot springs near the village of Boma'Ngombe. These images are similar to ones found all over Tanzania as the long, hot day begins to cool and night approaches. It's this time of the day that people begin to herd their livestock to the safety of their homes and the cattle boma's, after a day spent out in the open searching for grazing and water.
The photo above shows women herding their donkey's home - many of the donkey's are carrying loads of firewood or containers filled with water from a nearby river. Donkey's are cared for mainly by the women here, they are known as 'beasts of burden' as their main purpose is to carry loads from place to place.
This old 'Mzee' (a respectful term used here for an elderly man) is a Maasai dressed in traditional Maasai blankets. He flagged us down and asked us for a lift - depsite the fact that we were heading in the opposite direction to him ! (We politely refused - I think he just wanted to experience the novelty of riding in a car !)
There had been recent rain in parts of the area we travelled through, as you can see by the large puddles of water on the road in the photo above. You will very often find goats, sheep and cattle drinking from these puddles and have to swerve off the road to avoid them !
If you look carefully, at the part of the photo directly above the tree, you will see not only white fluffy cloud, but also a small section of the very top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, covered in a crisp white cap of snow. Quite a contrast to the dry, thorn tree studded African landscape spreading out below her - but that's Africa for you .... in all her beauty, a land of complete contrasts.
