What I've Been Up To Lately .....

Walking with friends on the farm - the trees to the right of the photo are the ones at the bottom of our garden

I can’t believe that the first month of 2009 is already over ! January was a busy month for us, even though we were hoping for a quieter one after the hectic rush of the Christmas season, holidays, socializing, having my parents here etc.

January saw us hosting a few company lunches and teas out at the farm (prospective clients, current clients and directors from our head office in Holland). This kept me busy, especially a lunch 2 weekends ago for 12 people in total, which I catered for entirely alone – thank goodness for Justin’s help in the kitchen (his sister, Upendo, also came in to work that weekend) with the washing up, clearing and serving. The oven of my gas stove is quite small, it doesn’t have a warming drawer and although I have a microwave oven (which I only ever use for heating food in) this can’t run all the time as for the better part of the day we run the electricity in the house on battery power. Still, everything went well and the lunch (a roast rolled leg of pork with all the trimmings) was enjoyed by everyone.

We’ve also had friends over to the farm (some expat friends dropped in on us unexpectedly a few weekends ago, they are currently living and working in Uganda so had lots of things to tell us about that beautiful East African country – I have never been) and have been getting together with our neighbours for regular Sunday lunches.

My daughter has completed the first half of her new school term, and is already on half term break – yay, that means no 3 hour round trips to school for at least 10 days ! My husband and I share the care of the school gardens with another couple, so we’ve also been at the school doing gardening (or should I say, overseeing one of our farm gardeners - Hemmed - and his lawnmower !) and attended a school parent’s meeting & light lunch at a private Game Lodge last week – the kids were all kept occupied by child minders who took them down to see Zebra, Wildebeest (Enu) and Impala drinking from the lodge water hole & I couldn’t help but think how lucky they all are (without even knowing it !) as most children here grow up around wildlife and for them seeing a Zebra or Lion so close-up is merely part of life and nothing out of the ordinary !

My pregnancy is going well and seems to be going really quickly this time round – I have just over 3 months to go and seeing as I rapidly gained around 25 kg’s (55 lb’s) when pregnant with my daughter and have only gained 3 kg’s (6,6 lb’s) this pregnancy so far, I’m confident that I’m managing it much better this time than I did the last time – I think the second time around you are much wiser as you know that advice like “you should be eating for 2, you know !” and “the pregnancy weight will just fall off you after the baby is born, especially if you breastfeed” is utter nonsense !

So, that’s what I’ve been up to this past month and February looks to be just as busy – just thought that I’d write this post to catch up and let you know what I’ve been getting up to this year so far, and I hope that you’ve all had a great start to 2009 so far, too !

Today It's All About Ice Cream - and Women !

"Twiga" (which means "Giraffe" in the local Tanzanian language of Kiswahili) stands guard over my pasta & rice storage jars on a shelf in my kitchen (he also keeps an eye out for husbands & children who steal biscuits & treats from the biscuit jar when they shouldn't be!)

I’ve been lucky in that during the year since my blog has been up & running many websites have picked up on it and contacted me to publish my posts (mostly recipes) on their sites. In turn, this has brought me more traffic and readers which may not have otherwise found my blog.

The majority of my posts (around 65) have been picked up and published online by Reuters and the Chicago Sun-Times. I still find it hard to believe that thoughts and words which I sit typing out on my computer in a remote corner of Africa are being read all around the world, by hundreds of people every day when in all likelihood the only adult I will have a proper conversation with ‘in person’ for weeks on end is my husband, and in all likelihood the only people I will come into contact with for just as many weeks will be my daughter, my husband & our 4 house/garden staff. Yet thoughts & things about my everyday life are read the world over by more people than I would ever meet or see here in months – the wonders of ‘modern technology’, hey ?!

Aside from the obvious bonus of boosting my readership, and the wonderful people I have met through blogging, the main reason I am happy about my blog being published all over the web, is because it is helping to spread the word about Tanzania, and what a beautiful country she is to visit ! I also hope to provide a more positive image of Africa to the outside world, a taste of the ‘real’ Africa as seen through my eyes, and one which perhaps many people do not always get to see.

Now, whilst I do not have outside links on my blog to different websites, these are 2 who have published posts or recipes of mine who I assured I would mention on my blog, as a thank you for doing so and if you have the time, please do click on the links and visit them, as both are great sites with lots of interesting information.

Firstly, there is Jenn’s website Serving Ice Cream which covers everything from ice cream recipes to ice cream gifts, to what you need to set up your own ice cream business aswell as ice cream shops around the world & I was happy to put Tanzania on the map when Jenn asked me if I could write about the Boma Ice Cream Centre which I wrote about last year in my post “Ice Cream Kids”. You can read what Jenn published about this little Tanzanian ice cream shop over here !

Then there is All4Women which is a great South African website which covers everything from Health to Parenting to Relationships, Cars, News and more … in fact, it has a little of everything & is also a nice, clutter-free site which isn’t filled with annoying ads or pop-up’s ! All4Women has published quite a few of my recipes, with some like the recent one I did for Pork Schnitzels, even featuring in their newsletter as “Recipe of the Week” (they have a great selection of newsletters which you can sign up for). Their recipe index makes browsing easy with clearly laid out categories and thumbnail photo’s of each dish, to whet your appetite !

I hope that you enjoy browsing the above 2 websites and I just want to thank you all once again for reading me as often as you do, and for all the wonderful people I have met through the blog - and for all the wonderful blogs I read daily – with the click of my mouse I can be transported anywhere in the world and right into your homes and catch a glimpse into your lives – and I enjoy each and every visit with you all !

An Award, Tag & Ad Free Blog !

Entrance pathway running along the side of our house

Well - after much thought & consideration, I’ve decided that as from the beginning of February, I’m going to make this an Award & Tag free blog.

Whilst I greatly appreciate the wonderful awards given to me by my fellow bloggers, I’m sure that those of you who get them and pass them on will agree with me that as lovely as they are to receive, they are also very time consuming (some have to be passed on to as many as 10 other blogs !) as the linking and passing on etc does take up a lot of time & effort.

Aside from the time it takes me when I get these, I also always first and foremost have my blog readers in mind. I know that you would far rather see photo’s & read an interesting post on something that has recently happened here on the farm, or on an interesting place in Tanzania, than to read a post about an award I’ve just received, and what it is for !

Also, the award banners do take up a lot of space in my sidebar and recently I’ve had at least 3 readers tell me that my blog is taking some time to load these days – and all I want is for reading my blog to be a pleasant and user-friendly experience ! (This is also the reason why I stick to a maximum of 3 blog posts per page because I want the front page to load quickly & I don’t want my readers to have to scroll, scroll, scroll down forever to get to where they want to be !)

I’m proud that this is also an advertisement free blog and always will be. I have no desire to make money from blogging – I do it for sheer enjoyment and am happy to say that you will never see an ad on my blog ! Last year I was approached by a company that wanted me to package all my recipes into an E book and sell it from my blog. My response was, why on earth would I want to sell my recipes when they are free for anyone to use and enjoy, right here on the blog ?!

So, whilst I hope that I’m not offending anyone by the decisions I’ve made, and whilst I sincerely appreciate all the awards/tags that have been given to me so far, I hope that you understand why I have chosen not to accept any more in the future.

Three More Awards !

Thank you to Linda from "Remote Treechanger" for this "The Lovely Award" !

Thank you to AKMOM at "What's Baking ?" for this "One Lovely Blog" award !

Thank you to both Linda at "Remote Treechanger" & Lori at "The Skoog Farm Journal" for this "Lemonade" award !

Well I’m really thrilled to say that my blog has been given another 3 awards recently ! I am very grateful for these awards and for my wonderful fellow bloggers who’ve given them to me, but must just apologise for having taken so long to post about them and to pass them on (due to going away, internet problems etc).

Anyway, here they finally are, aswell as the links to the wonderful bloggers who awarded them to me, and also the blogs which I’m passing them on to (some awards ask that you pass them on to up to 8 bloggers each, but due to lack of time etc I am passing each on to another 2 bloggers, & hope that this is okay) -:

Firstly, I received the “One Lovely Blog Award” from AKMOM who’s Alaskan blog What’s Baking ?” is a delicious blog which will satisfy your sweet tooth in no time ! Thanks so much for this award, AKMOM ! The award is to be passed on to another 7 bloggers. These are the 2 bloggers I’ve chosen to pass this “One Lovely Blog” award on to -:

Catherine, who’s blog “Dispatches From The Deise” is set in the Irish, rural county of Waterford. Catherine has spent 20 years living in & working in developing countries (including Tanzania !) & has some interesting stories to tell !

“Hill Upon Hill” – an Australian blog with such lovely posts and photographs. I always feel very peaceful after my visits here !

Linda, who lives in & blogs from the Australian bush with her husband & 5 children has a delightful blog which has a little bit of everything “Remote Treechanger” & she has kindly given me not 1 but 2 awards, the first being “The Lovely Award” - a little about this award follows …

“This blog invests and believes the proximity - nearness in space, time and relationships. These blogs are extremely charming. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in prizes or self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give attention to these writers! Deliver this award to eight bloggers who must choose eight more and include this cleverly written text into the body of their award."

I have chosen to pass “The Lovely Award” on to the following 2 bloggers –:

Also in Ireland, Peggy at “Organic Growing Pains” - I am amazed at what she achieves on her allotment & the wonderful organic produce which she grows there – her blog is always so cheerful and informative, too !

Moving on to a warmer part of the world for now (!!) to Mize in Portugal & her blog “My Country Home” – I am amazed at her budgeting and discipline as she works towards her goal of building a home in the country for her family.

Then Linda also awarded me the “Lemonade Award”, here is a little about the award …..

“There are some rules in getting this award. First you have to give thanks and link back to the person who bestowed the award upon you in the first place. Second you have to nominate 10 bloggers that you'd like to give the award to. It's that easy. The Lemonade Award is given to sites which show either great attitude and or gratitude.”

Thank you Linda, for both of these awards, I am honored ;)

Lori in America at “The Skoog Farm Journal” also awarded me the “Lemonade Award”, so I am honoured to have received it twice but THANK YOU LORI & thank you, too, for blogging every day & sharing such wonderful photos of your daily life & all your animals with us – you are one hardworking & very busy lady !

I am going to pass the “Lemonade Award” on to the following 2 bloggers -:

Jo in South Africa for her blog “Memorable Meanders” … she posts on everything from gardening to cooking (some great recipes !) to pets to spirituality to the local people and life in South Africa, always something interesting to read !

Dedene in France for her blog “Soyez la Bienvenue Chez Moi ” … Dedene is an excellent cook and a fascinating woman with a great sense of humor and is never afraid to speak her mind ! (BTW her blog is in English, just incase from the title you thought it was all in French)

So thank you – all of you – for giving my blog these awards. I really appreciate them all and to you all too, for your openness and for sharing so much of your lives and your thoughts on your blogs every day for so many people to read and enjoy !

Awards & Meme's ....

Thank you Linda of Remote Treechanger for this award ...

Thanks, Marie of "A Colorful World" for this award ....

Thanks, Jenny of "Backwoods Wife" for this award ....

Oh wow, I have been honoured to receive another 3 awards for my blog in the past couple of weeks. Thank you everyone for giving these to me, I really appreciate the recognition from my fellow bloggers ! Some of these awards have to be passed on to up to 10 other blogs but as we all know, that can take up a lot of time (& linking !) so I have chosen to just award 2 each. Hope that’s okay & that you understand, it’s not that there are a lack of great blogs out there – only a lack of time !

I have also been tagged with 3 Meme’s (as in “Me ! Me ! It’s all about Me !”) Well I don’t usually do Meme’s but thought that this time I would, seeing as I’ve had so many sent my way lately and as it so happens, all 3 of these Meme’s sent to me are the same, so I’m killing 3 birds with 1 stone here ! (Hope it’s okay to combine all 3 into 1, but I doubted you’d be interested in reading 18 random facts about me, as each one asked for 6 !)

So, first of all I want to thank Linda from “Remote Treechanger” for awarding me the “Butterfly Award – for the coolest blog I know”. This award is given to blogs described as "a friendly place to visit, offering an insight into their daily lives, sharing their pictures, recipes and family life. Reading their blogs is like reading a good magazine."

The rules for this award are -:

Put the logo on your blog
Add a link to the person who awarded you
Nominate 10 other blogs for this award (I’m nom
Add links to those blogs
Leave a message for your nominees on their blogs
Give a reason why you consider their blogs cool

I am going to pass this “Butterfly Award” along to the following 2 blogs -:

My dear Expat friend, Dedene, who lives in France and who's new blog "Soyes la Bienvenue Chez Moi" offers a fascinating glimpse into her life there. (We've been online friends for years though have never met in person !) Dedene always shoots straight from the hip, which is one of the things I really like about her !

Lori at "The Skoog Farm Journal" because not only is she one of the most avid bloggers I know, but she gives us all such a wonderful insight into her day-to-day life & chores which I find fascinating, & always a nice place to escape to !

I also received the “Hot Blog Award” from Marie at “A Colorful World” (thanks so much for this, Marie !) & I am passing this on to these 2 great Bloggers-:

AKMom at "What's Baking ?" - a talented Alaskan Mom who bakes the most incredible treats - I only recently discovered her blog & find it so inspiring (not to mention mouthwatering !) that now I'm hooked !

Linda from "Remote Treechanger" because I love reading about her daily life in another remote corner of the world, not to mention her great weekly menu plans !

Then Jenny from “Backwoods Wife” awarded me the “Kreativ Blogger Award” (thanks so much, Jenny !) & in order to accept, I have to post 6 random things about me (which will also be my Meme below) and pass the award on to 6 fellow bloggers (I’ve chosen 2, just due to time issues !) I’m passing it on to these 2 great bloggers -:

Nancy from "A Recipe A Day"

I'm passing the Meme on to these 2 great bloggers above as I've been reading them both for sometime now & I admit, I'm nosey and would like to learn more about you both ;) I will also combine this with the 2 Meme's below, as they are all identical - hope that's okay !

Linda from “Remote Treechanger” & Ewa from “Ewa in the Garden also tagged me with a Meme (thanks Linda and Ewa for this !), here are the rules -:

Link to the person who tagged you
Post the rules on your blog
Write six random things about yourself
Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them
Let each person know they’ve been tagged and leave a comment on their blog
Let the tagger know when your entry is up.
***************************************************************************
Okay, so here are the 6 random facts about me, for the above 3 Meme/tags -:

I am the daughter of a British father and a Zambian mother, I am Rhodesian by birth yet have no citizenship in that country – instead I am a British citizen with South African permanent residency & Tanzanian residency, South African identification documents and a British passport. Whenever I land at Heathrow the customs people there say to me “Welcome Home !” and this always amuses me, especially since they usually also comment on my “Australian” accent !

I am a night owl and never go to bed before 12.30 am. I am at my most productive at night. I am moody and irritable in the mornings (don’t talk to me then !), and would sleep until 11.00 am each day if I could !

I have in the past, been involved with serious online campaigns and petitions against pedophilia and child internet pornography. I am paranoid about the power of the internet vs. child abductions/exploitation which is why you will never find photo’s, personal references or my daughter’s name on my blog ! Do I want a potential online child abduction ring to know what my daughter looks like, what her likes/dislikes are, where she goes to school, where we live & go on holiday’s & when ? Do I want to expose her as a potential abduction target ? Do I want to have her photograph downloaded & “Doctored” & used goodness knows where ? No thanks, nothing is worth that risk !

My biggest regret in life was waiting until my early 30’s to start a family. (And realizing then, that it was not as simple as just “falling pregnant” or staying pregnant, for that matter.) However, my greatest joy in life is my daughter – it was definitely worth the wait !

I love smoking & smoked 30 + cigarettes a day for 14 years. I gave up almost 5 years ago when I fell pregnant with my daughter. I still miss it every day, although I would never start smoking again, I don’t object to people smoking around me & in fact, when in a restaurant (‘cause here we can still smoke in most public places !) I deliberately position myself near smoking tables so that I can inhale – and enjoy – the second hand smoke – aren’t I terrible ?!

I was brought up to treat people of all colour with equal respect, & to stand up for others who cannot stand up for themselves - I truly believe & live my life according to this principal. I really struggled as a young adult living in South Africa under the apartheid regime. I worked amongst displaced Malawian citizens and poverty struck South Africans, & was scathingly labeled a “crusader for the blacks” (although I was proud of this fact). I also turned state witness in a court case against my (white) boss who had been abusing (black) colleagues, which made national news headlines at the time (I leaked the story to the press). I was proud of all I achieved there, yet this is one of the reasons why I could never settle, or feel comfortable living in, South Africa. (Despite what you may hear, apartheid is still alive & well in many places there.) I truly despise people who judge others according to the colour of their skin, & who treat them with disrespect because they consider themselves superior because their skin is white ! (Unfortunately we have many of these people here in East Africa, too – fortunately, they are in the minority.)

So, there you have it – my 6 random facts ! I love reading other people’s Meme’s as it gives me a quick snapshot view of that person, perhaps things you wouldn’t normally ask or guess about a person … mine were a bit long but then that’s me, I always tend to ‘beat around the bush’ !

Just A Comment ....

I can take criticism, & I value the feedback I receive from all my readers - the majority of which is always positive and encouraging. Of course there are always a few negative, sarcastic people out there but hey, I can handle them as we all encounter people like this in everyday life.

However, if you are going to post a rude, sarcastic comment then at least have the BALLS to leave your real name & not just "Anonymous" - okay ? I think it's a bit cowardly to write a mean comment and not even leave your real name. If you don't like me, or my blog - then just don't read me again, okay ?

Anyway, if you are a nasty "Anonymous" commenter, I have tracked your IP address, I know which country you are from, and I am tracking you for future visits. Just so that you know.

Memorable Meanders - A Memorable Blog Which I Just Know You'll Love !

Jo's blog "Memorable Meanders" has a fascinating mix of African stories from her adventures all over the continent. (I particularly enjoyed her crocodile story !)

Around 3 ½ years ago I met and made a special friend online called Jo. Some of you will have noticed that Jo is a regular commenter here and has been since I first started to blog in February this year.

Over the years, Jo has become a very special friend of mine. We first ‘met’ when Jo was living in a remote part of West Africa (also as an Expat wife) hailing from South Africa and before that, Zimbabwe. Jo has many years of expat living under her belt, and has lived on gold & diamond mines throughout Africa in countries such as Namibia, Mali and Guinea. Living on a remote farm in East Africa as Jo lived on a remote mine in West Africa, we had a lot in common and many similar experiences in our third world lives. We became firm friends !

Of course, aside from 3rd world African living we were also united by a joint desire to help animals in distress. Jo had long since started improving the lives of animals in need everywhere around her and at that time, most recently in West Africa - and aside from rescuing a special cat and bringing him safely out to South Africa by air, she also had a duck feeding programme in a local West African village and then went on to return to South Africa and continue to save animals there – some in slum/township areas which were being neglected. So, as you can see, Jo and I are kindred spirits !

Aside from hundreds of emails between us over the years (Jo and I always know what the other is up to and are in touch weekly – if not daily at times) we have also spent many hours talking on the telephone when I am in South Africa on holiday, and we always send each other gifts and cards … yet we have never ever met ! (It’s on the cards though and may happen in one of two African countries in the not-too-distant future … so watch this space !)

The reason why I am telling you all this, is because Jo is a writer. Aside from having had some of her work published, Jo is also a regular writer for a local provincial newspaper and has recently started her own blog, Memorable Meanders.

Now, I am not just saying this because Jo is a dear friend of mine, but you really should pop in to her blog because it makes for fascinating reading and has a little of everything and also some very interesting stories about Jo’s life in a different part of Africa to the one I live in, including all her adventures. If you enjoy my blog, I know that you will enjoy Jo’s and I know that she would love to have you pop over to her corner of the blog world for a visit !

Another Award For My Blog - Thank You !

I am honoured that my blog has been given the “E For Excellent” Award by not one, but two of my fellow bloggers over the past couple of weeks.

First off, Nancy from A Recipe A Day gave my blog this award. I love Nancy’s simple, easy home style cooking (not to mention that she is a fellow dog lover !) & her blog is one I read every day without fail.

Secondly, Melissa of Thistledew Farm gave my blog this award. Thistledew is a small cooperative farm in the US and Melissa blogs about everything from gardening to delicious recipes to all the creative things she gets up to !

Thank you Nancy and Melissa for this lovely award !

Now I am supposed to pass the award on to 2 fellow bloggers and although this is always difficult to do (so many wonderful blogs out there to choose from !) I have picked the following -:

Jenn-Lee’s blog “Moments”. Jenn-Lee is one of those people who has such a wonderful sunny personality that you can almost see and feel it when you read her blog ! Her writing is upbeat and often funny and I love the gorgeous photo’s she takes. She has a great outlook on life and although we live different lives on opposite sides of the world, I can relate a lot to some of the things she goes through as a busy Mum !

Mize’s blog “Portuguese Menu”. Mize is recording on her blog, a series of authentic Portuguese recipes and teaching us all about authentic Portuguese ingredients. I love being inspired by new ways of cooking, and learning new techniques & I also enjoy Mize’s friendly blogging style and colourful photo’s, which always tantalize my tastebuds !

Please do pop along to visit all the blogs I’ve mentioned here. I promise you won’t be disappointed !

Thank You's ..... & A New Look !

Sunsets mean endings, but also new beginnings .....
(Sunset from our front veranda a few weeks ago)

I just want to say a great big THANK YOU to every single one of you for your lovely comments and emails after the loss of my beloved Zonde on Monday. It really does help to ease the pain a little, knowing that there are so many people around the world who care … I appreciate each and every one of you and wish that I could meet you all in person one day !

Justin and I picked a beautiful spot to bury her, under a peach tree in a quiet corner of the garden overlooking the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Justin, who has cared for Zonde for the past 8 years of her life is absolutely devastated. He says that Zonde was the first dog he ever knew that taught him what wonderful creatures dogs are & that knowing Zonde made him realize that dogs are loving, feeling, intelligent animals. All our staff have given their condolences which is unusual because traditionally people here do not make a great fuss of an animal dying. Our gardeners and askari have all stood around the grave, and told us how very sorry they are. Given the fact that Zonde used to chase them all and bark at them if they got too close to the house and generally make their life a misery, I think this is amazing and a true testament to the wonderful spirit she had, and the effect on other people’s lives, & it is wonderful to think that her memory will continue to live on in their hearts.

Having my mother-in-law staying with us & being out of my usual routines, plus the fact that we’ve been away on safari and my heartbreak with Zonde means that I am so behind with my emails and so many of you have sent emails to me that I promise to reply to soon. Please don’t think I’m ignoring you ! Also, all the blogs I regularly read I have not even visited for a week or so now – likewise all the comments I get I always visit the blog of the person commenting, as you can see I have not been commenting at all lately but I will be back soon to catch up with my fellow bloggers !

I have over 100 photo’s from my safari to sort through and I will be starting to post some of them and write about our weekend away soon – we had a wonderful time and it was nice to be back in the Tanzanian bush for a few days.

I also wanted to say (well of course I’m sure you’ve already noticed it !) that I have finally re vamped my blog as I wanted something more personal than a standard blogger template & something that reflected my personality a little more. I know I promised a new look ages ago but you know what they say “There’s No Hurry In Africa !”.

I want to thank Diana of Sass n Scrap Designs who helped me with the design & who was so patient with me as I am quite fussy & was very specific about what I wanted, and I made so many changes along the way until I had exactly what I wanted & with Diana’s skill and creativity, it looks exactly as I pictured it. Thanks, Diana !

I hope that you all like the new look - please do let me know what you think of it !

Last but not least, thanks once again to each and every one of you who ‘reads’ me. I have had almost 30 000 hits since I started this blog 8 months ago and I cannot tell you how much it means to me to know that so many people the world over read me every day. I have always loved writing and have always kept daily diaries – blogging is a natural extension of that for me & I have to be honest, living the life I do can feel quite isolated and it can be lonely at times & as I sit typing away in a remote corner of Africa, looking out over my banana trees & Kilimanjaro beyond & at times only having the company of my husband, daughter and staff for weeks on end, it makes me feel less isolated knowing that I am connecting with so many people out there in the ‘real’ world. So ….. thank you !

Bits & Pieces ......

A lazy weekend on the farm is being had by humans & animals alike !

Thanks, Mize, for this great award for my blog !

I hope that you’re having a wonderful weekend wherever you may be in the world. I’m having a lovely, warm weekend here in Africa and am relaxing today with my family at home as my husband is off for the day – yay !

There are a few things I wanted to mention, hence the “Bits & Pieces” blog title. Firstly, I apologize if my posts have been a little ‘flat’ lately, but I have been laid up all week with a nasty cold & chest infection. It was only yesterday that I started to feel my old self again.

My exciting news is that my mother-in-law is on her way to us from the UK and will be here in Tanzania with us in a little over a week’s time. She’ll be with us for 3 weeks and has only been here once (briefly – a few days) before. So we’re really looking forward to showing her the beautiful country which we live in, & introducing her to our friends here. We have lots planned during her stay, and of course I’ll be blogging about all the interesting places we visit & what we get up to ..... so watch this space !

I must also confess that I am completely, utterly, hopelessly addicted to …. Ebay ! I have been for a number of years now, I think that it is the best thing invented since the internet LOL but the only problem is that not many sellers ship to Africa so whenever we are on our way to the UK, or have family coming this way – I shop up an Ebay storm ! So, I have been busy on Ebay for the past 2 weeks & as any fellow addicts will relate to, sitting up until the early hours (due to our time difference here) waiting for auctions to end & running through to wake my husband & excitedly shout “I’m highest bidder !” or “I won !” My Ebay purchases include cook books and things, so the blog will (hopefully !) soon be bursting with some new recipes and ideas.

Another long overdue thank you is due to my friend Mize in Portugal, who awarded my blog the “I Love Your Blog” award a few weeks ago. Thanks, Mize ! I love her blog, “My Country Home” too and Mize has a new blog which focuses on Portuguese food called “Portuguese Menu” which you should go & check out if you haven't done so already !

I also just have to share with you that a while ago I was contacted via email by someone from the UK who was on his way to Tanzania to do volunteer work here for a month in one of our coastal areas. He found my blog through this post which I wrote a while ago on deep sea fishing in Tanzania. He is in Tanzania at the moment, & we have since made contact on the ‘phone & it has been wonderful to talk to the first ever person (save friends & family) who reads my blog ! He is doing some wonderful work here - how thoughtful it is of people to give their time so freely to help those less fortunate than themselves.

What else ? Ah, yes. I am busy working on a completely new look for my blog, plus a few minor changes to it. I thought it was time for a bit of a facelift & for me to put more of a personal stamp on it. So I hope to be ‘unveiling’ that soon, & am dying to hear what you all think of it !

Okay, enough of my babbling - let me get off the computer & go and enjoy the rest of my Sunday with my family ...... hope that you all have a super Sunday, too ;)

Every Dog Deserves A Decent Dinner !

I don’t have advertisements on my blog, but I do like to have links to animal charities like The Animal Rescue Site (see the purple button in my right sidebar) because clicking on this provides free food to animals in shelters & best of all, it costs you nothing to ‘click’ and donate food this way.

A few weeks ago I came across another great site which allows you to donate free food to needy animals. It is the FREEKIBBLE site & by clicking on this site daily, you answer a fun question and if you get it right, they donate 10 pieces of kibbles to dogs in shelters. The catch ? Well, if you get the answer wrong, they still donate the 10 kibbles ! There is also a sister site called FREEKIBBLEKAT where you get to answer another fun question, & donate 10 free kibbles to cats in need !

You get to learn some fascinating and little known facts about dogs & cats as you answer the daily ‘trivia’ questions - but the sites only allow you to answer one question (per site) per day.

(I have added links to both sites in my right sidebar so that you can click daily - you can't miss them !)

So, let’s get clicking & help to feed unwanted, neglected and abused animals that are being cared for by wonderful people on a voluntary basis – just one click could make the world of difference to a dog or cat in need.

Awards, Tags & Blogging Things ....

I’m relatively new to blogging, having only started this blog just over 6 month’s ago, but have so far been amazed at what a warm and supportive community of bloggers there are out there. People from all walks of life, in every country around the world, blogging about all sorts of different things … well, I am happy to be part of such a vibrant community of people, and to have been so warmly welcomed by all of them, too !

Of course, part of blogging involves exchanging links and tagging other bloggers and this is actually a good way of increasing your blog readership, amongst other things. But I hope you don’t mind, I really really hope that you won’t be offended if I become one of those bloggers who doesn’t pass tags and forwards along ?

I don’t mean to be rude - honestly I don’t, but most of these awards/tags do say that you shouldn’t feel pressurized to pass them on (because it can be very time consuming forwarding and linking and advising 5 or 6 or 7 other blogs every time & also, how do you narrow down your “forwards” so as not to offend the rest of your blogging friends ?) so I am going to choose not to. Hope you all understand and don’t mind too much !

Anyway, I of course do want to link to and thank 2 wonderful ladies who’ve recently awarded my blog -:

I want to give Lori over at “The Skoog Farm Journal” a very belated thank you for tagging me and giving me the “Blogging Friends Forever Gold Card” some time ago – thanks, Lori - I am a regular daily reader of your blog and can’t wait to get my daily Skoog Farm “fix” ! (My Mum also “reads” you all the way over in South Africa !) . I am honoured to be considered amongst your blogging friends. (You can read Lori's great blog over here).

Then I’d also like to thank Josie over at “Nerdy Parenting” for the “Brillante Weblog” award which she recently awarded my blog – thanks, Josie – I’m honoured ! Josie is a Mum of 3 adorable children & the coolest "nerdy" Mum I know ! (You can read Josie’s blog over here).

Of course I can’t forget all you lovely people who read my blog, either …. if it weren’t for you and your great support then I wouldn’t be as motivated as I am each day, to find interesting things to blog about and share with you all – so, thanks for popping in every day to read my ramblings, I really appreciate it and thanks too, to all of you who email me questions, suggestions and observations – I really enjoy getting the feedback !

Hope that you all have a wonderful week ahead, no matter which corner of the world you're in as you read this .............

Farm Blogs From Around The World

A field of wheat ripening in the sun - taken on our farm just last week. This wheat is destined for the local Tanzanian market.

I recently became aware of a great blog which has been started by Ian Walthew called “Farm Blogs From Around The World”. Apart from writing regular blog posts about the world of farming, Ian is gathering in one place the best farm blogs from around the world, and links to all these blogs can be found on his blog here.

So far Ian has farm blogs listed from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, U.K. and the USA. My blog is the only African farm blog at the moment, but hopefully I won’t be alone for too long ! (You can read the write-up Ian did of my blog over here.)

If you know of any other farm blogs (from any part of the world), please do let Ian know so that he can add them to his ever growing list.

Ian is also the author of a recently published book “A Place In My Country” which has received rave reviews and is a non-fiction book (that reads like a novel) about life in rural England. You can read more about it here.

Happy reading – I know that I, for one can’t wait to explore and visit the blogs which Ian has listed ……

A Quick Catch Up, & .... I've Been Tagged !

A beautiful Hibiscus flower in my garden

I’m late posting today, I’ve been a bit sick due to a really nasty bee sting a couple of days ago. I’ve had a mild allergic reaction to it (which has never happened to me before) & the antihistamine tablets I’ve been taking have 'knocked me for a six'. I’m not one to get sick often - & I usually just carry on regardless. But this sting was a bad one … on my right calf, which has swollen like a tennis ball and has a nasty bruise (?!) to go with it. So my husband came home early today, and I spent the afternoon sleeping. Which is why I’m late posting today !

Other news from my side of the world …. Tessa’s (the ‘calorie counting cat’ !) operation went well and she should be home once her stitches are out next week. My other stray cats (the recent 3 additions) are doing well and have all been de-wormed and are gaining weight now that they have a regular supply of food.

We are hoping to take a few day’s break in early July – between planting and harvesting seasons here on the farm – and will either go to the Tanzanian coast for a few days, or to the neighbouring country of Kenya, to spend a few days in the capital city of Nairobi. Whichever option we choose, both will be great opportunities to blog about and I’ll take lots of photo’s to post here, too !

My parent’s (who now live in South Africa) usually come to Tanzania to visit us every second year or so, & they have just confirmed their visit to us this year - they’ll be here from the end of November until early January ’09 and I can’t wait ! My mother-in-law (who now lives in the UK) is also hoping to be able to come and see us in October this year, if she can. We usually travel around a bit when family are here (a surprise trip or two is usually on the cards, aswell !), so I will continue to blog about our adventures and travels during this time.

My daughter has her first Sport’s Day this coming Friday, and I have offered to take a couple of platters of sweet and savoury child friendly snacks along. I'll post photo’s and recipes of what I make later on in the week – I’m still thinking about exactly what to make, actually – any ideas ?!

I’ve met so many wonderful new friends through blogging, and today I was tagged by fellow blogger Mariz in Dubai who's blog is called “Reflections By Mariz”. I have to tag a couple of other bloggers so I am tagging Roberto ‘down under’ over at his very informative blog “Blogs I Browse”and Ginger in Canada over at “Gingembre’s Place” where you are guaranteed a chuckle ... or two !

The idea of the tag is so that people can get to learn more about you, I suppose. So, here are my answers to the 20 questions I was tagged for -:

Here are the rules for this tag : Remove one (1) question from below and add in your personal question, make it a total of 20 questions, then tag fellow bloggers and let the meme continue . List the people you've tagged at the end of this post. (I did this above, though)

1. What is your favorite food?
- Thai, Chinese & traditional South African (do I have to choose just one ?!)
2. What was your happiest moment when you were a child?
- Happiest moments were the time spent growing up in Paulpietersburg, Northern Natal with my horses Midnight & Avalanche and my best childhood friend, Mandy (& we’re still friends 22 years later !)

- Australia, America (do I have to choose just one ?!)

- “Hate” is a strong word, but what I most dislike about my person is my stomach (show me a woman - especially one who’s had children, who loves her stomach, eh ?!?!)
5. When you encounter a sad moment, what do you do?
- cry my eyes out !
6. What are you afraid to lose the most?
- the ‘thing’ I’d hate to lose the most is my good health
7. If you win $1 million, what would you do?
- build my dream home, build my parents a dream home, build a domestic animal rescue sanctuary here and travel the world
8. What do you love the most about last year (2007)?
- watching my daughter grow from a baby/toddler into an independent child with a mind of her own
9. What is a little known fact about you, that would perhaps surprise people ?
- I’m not one for comedy movies, but I LOVE horror. Not ghosts and hauntings horror, but horror that could almost be real like … think along the lines of “Creep”, “The Descent” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. I love scaring myself half to death ! Ooohhhhh ….
10. How do you cope with boredom?
- honestly ? I never get bored. I keep busy reading, playing with my daughter and online. (Is the mother of a young child EVER bored ?!?!)
11. Till now, what is the moment that you regret the most?

16. What has been the craziest thing you’ve ever done in your whole life?
- living as the only woman on a remote construction site with my husband & and all male construction crew of 300 in the wild African bush and building one of Tanzania’s most beautiful luxury camps from scratch – and having to bath in buckets of river water for 6 weeks …. Ewwww !
17. What do you look forward to in 2008?
- falling pregnant with another child
18. If your life is a song, what title best fits it?
- Oh my. This has me stumped. But my favourite song of all time is “American Pie” by Don McLean. Does that count ?!
19. What is your inspiration in life?
- My parents gave me the best foundation in life a child could ask for – I suppose you could say that they inspired me to be the best person I could be, and to lead the best life I could
20. If you were to change one event in your life, what would it be?
- Although I believe in fate & that everything in life happens for a reason, I'd have to say the event I'd change - if I could - would be losing my second baby. No one should ever have to go through that.

Blog Housekeeping .... Some Updates

The "Metrification and the Housewife" pamphlet which gave me such a laugh ! (Read more about it below)

No school runs this week – it’s half term – yippee ! I’ve told my husband that I do not want to set foot off the farm during this time. Not a FOOT ! I am tired of bumpy roads (and packed lunches !), and am relishing the thought of – just staying put for a while.

So, no excuse then, time to do a little housekeeping … no, not THAT sort of housekeeping, silly ! (I have house staff to help out with THAT !) But rather, some blog housekeeping …

Thanks to the people who’ve suggested that I alter my header (sunset) picture so that the title/description is more readable. I know that the green does not show up clearly against the photo background, so I’m working on that as we speak …

As the largest percentage of my blog visitors are from the US (happy Memorial Day to you all, by the way !), and the UK, and as both countries follow the Imperial measurement system, but all my recipes are written in the Metric measurement system, I have added a gadget to the bottom of the blog (right above the “Recent Visitors Map”) that enables you to quickly calculate between Metric and Imperial. (Thanks to Ginger, for bringing this to my attention.)

I’ve removed the Google “Search” bar to make way for the new conversion gadget, as I don’t want my blog to become too cluttered. (I don’t know about you, but I find nothing more annoying when visiting a blog/website to find that it takes ages to load due to all sorts of flashing, beeping gadgets, adverts and falling snowflakes all over the place ?)

I have also changed the number of blog posts on the first page from 5 to 3 so that the blog still loads fairly quickly.

If you need a giggle to cheer up your Monday, the picture above is of a leaflet I inherited along with some old family recipe books recently. It was issued in Salisbury, Rhodesia (present day Harare, Zimbabwe) in December 1970 and it’s title is “Metrification and the Housewife” … the front cover (pictured) reads -:

“THE MASSIVE LADY - Weight will be known as Mass”

The blue diagram is of a lady standing on a bathroom scale, wrapped in a towel and the words underneath read “My weight used to be 220 pounds but now my mass is only 100 kilograms ”

The pamphlet goes on to reassure the 1970’s ‘housewife’ ….. “How will these changes affect the housewife ? Will all her favourite recipes and cookery books become quite useless ? No ! She can still bake as she always did, but she will buy the ingredients in amounts measured in the new system of units.”

The pamphlet was produced by the “Domestic Functional Committee of the Metrification Council” – my goodness, what a mouthful ....

Have a wonderful Monday, everyone ;)

An Ornamental Ginger Flower - for Ginger !

An Ornamental Ginger flower picked from my African garden for my friend Ginger, in Canada !

One of the great things about blogging, is that you get to ‘meet’ so many interesting people from all over the world. A fellow blogger who I’ve had the pleasure to ‘meet’, is Ginger. Ginger lives in Canada which to someone who lives in Africa, sounds very far away and rather exotic ! (She is a kindred spirit in that she, too, takes care of animals in need and is also a cat lover.)

Last week when I posted my recipe for Chocolate Cake, Ginger mentioned that she might just try the recipe out sometime. Which she did. So imagine my surprise when she not only baked it, but photographed it with a message stuck into the icing for me, and put it on her blog !

I’m tickled pink that my Chocolate Cake recipe has been made, and enjoyed, on the other side of the world and I just wanted to thank Ginger for ‘featuring’ it on her blog – and what better way to do that, than by giving her a bunch of flowers … or, what I thought a little more appropriate … an Ornamental Ginger flower, picked early this morning from my garden.

Do check out her blog
Gingembre’s Place sometime.

Thank you, Ginger !

A Blog Post A Day .....

Part of the garden, and entrance archway, at the side of our house

I have decided that as this blog approaches it’s 3 month anniversary, I will start posting once a day only. As much as I love writing and blogging and sharing my recipes, it does take a lot of time doing 2 posts a day, and cooking/photographing/writing up 7 recipes a week to post - because I like to only post recipes which are 'tried and tested' favourites of mine which I can also provide my own photos for, not just odd recipes taken out of recipe books which I hardly ever use.

Being off the farm for 2 days a week now with 3 hour round trips to school for my daughter and the pre-planning that goes into days like these, also takes up a lot of my time, and has prompted me to decide to settle on "A blog post a day" ....

By scaling down to a single blog post per day (I will alternate between recipes and stories of life on the farm, my pets, gardening and Tanzanian life in general) my posts may be a little longer, and might be combined posts e.g. a recipe with a story behind it, and how I came to cook it.

Of course during quiet times here on the farm I may post more than once a day, but will just see how it goes. Whatever happens, I promise that I will still update the blog at least once a day, so you will still have something new to read each time you visit !

Thanks, once again, to everyone for 'reading' me and for the great support and enthusiasm for what I've been writing about so far !

Results of My First Poll Are In !

Thanks to everyone who voted in my first poll ! The poll is now closed and as promised, here are the results below.

I asked what you’d like to read more of on the blog and based on the number of votes, this is what you said ….

- Posts about Farm Life (got the most votes)
- Posts about Recipes and posts about Pets (tied with the exact same number of votes each)
- Posts about Gardening (got the least votes)

Regular readers will notice that each day I do 2 posts – a recipe post and then a non food related post related to what’s going on in my day-to-day life. I will concentrate these posts on “Farm Life” and will also include a few now and then on gardening, pets and life in Tanzania in general.

It’s really great to have feedback from readers as it helps me to create a better blog by writing posts which I know the majority of you like reading, so thanks everyone for casting your vote and thanks to everyone who emailed me and left comments about the poll, too !
